Wool was the core of the British economy for centuries. Nationwide, weavers created globally admired woolen worsted cloth across a range of qualities and types, versatile and vogueish in design. Most expensive were complex damasks like this, reversible and subtly patterned by contrasting shining warp face and matte weft face. Particularly suited to furniture and wall coverings, this example and another in The Met's collection (x.397.2) repeat the same pattern produced in different colorways- this mustard yellow, and the other warm gold.
