Hannah Loring's elaborate family record reveals that her father Mathew (1751-1820), was married three times. Hannah was the only child born to Sarah Blake Loring (1763-1800), Mathew's second wife, who died eight days after Hannah's birth. The composition of the sampler was probably inspired by a print, as two later Massachusetts family records done in watercolor by a J. Forbes (New Hampshire Historical Society and National Archives) are identical in format.
