Quilt, Pineapple pattern
Ann Downing Hegeman
ca. 1865 · Cotton · The American Wing

The quilt top has twelve blocks appliquéd with red and green calico pineapples. An appliquéd grapevine border surrounds the entire field. The top and backing are of white woven cotton, and there is a solid red cotton edge binding. The appliqués are machine stitched on the broad parts of the leaves and pineapples and hand stitched around the grapes and thin stems. In addition to the finely quilted diagonal parallel lines over most of the piece, leaf patterns are quilted between the pineapple blocks.
