Raffaello Maffei (1456–1522) was an eminent citizen of his native Volterra and noted humanist whose itnerests included literature, philosophy, theology, and archaeology. He is the author of a critical edition of Basil and the Commentaria Urbana, an encyclopedic work on anthropology, geopgraphy, and philology.
