Nero and the Dying Seneca
Master of the Roman Emperors
ca. 1445 · Bronze · European Sculpture and Decorative Arts

This is a uniface cast of the reverse of a medal of Nero, the obverse of which shows his bust to the right. It is the work of an unidentified medallist, active in the 15th century, who specialized in pastiches of ancient Roman coins enlarged in scale. He habitually included the initials S[enatus] C[onsulto] ('by order of the Senate') which he had observed on such coins.
