Nijinsky posed for Rodin in 1912, shortly after the sculptor had defended his controversial ballet L'Après-midi d'un faun in an editorial in Le Matin. Nijinsky's sittings were cut short and a sculpture never completed. This head as well as a statuette of the dancer (see 1991.446), were cast after Rodin's death.
