The subject is a wholly idealized and invented classical pastoral scene: a hunter and his dog return to his family at evening with a bird, a rabbit, and grapes, the results of his day of foraging. The pottery factory of P. Ipsen, run by his widow, was represented in the international exhibitions of 1876 and 1878 and had an agent in London and other cities.
