Two rearing horses, related in pose and size but different in their greenish patina—a later addition—were part of the Untermyer gift to the Metropolitan Museum. (They were deaccessioned because the present bronze is of finer quality.) There has been no satisfactory solution to the question of the facture of these horses. A debt to the equestrian monuments and models of Giovanni Bologna's seventeenth-century Florentine followers, such as Pietro Tacca, is manifest, but a French adaptation from the time of Louis XIV is equally possible.
