These figures (see also 1976.422.2a, b) are carved in the back and the front, though not truly in the round. The carver was utilizing as much of the thin part of the tusk as he could to create a three-dimensional image; the dark concave areas on the figures' backs show the remains of the tusk's pulp cavity.
