The traditional identification of the sitter as the Dauphin Louis, son of Louis XV, was ruled out after a comparison with his known painted portraits. He is now thought to represent an aristocrat at Louis XV's court. The fresh and masterful style of the modelling suggests a dating to the years of Lemoyne's maturity, about 1745–50
