Bourdelle drew upon the artistic legacy of the Middle Ages in this sculpture, one of several carved stone replicas based on the second version of his model for the colossal monument erected at Niederbrück, Alsace. Versions also exist in bronze, cement (proof), plaster and marble. The monument was commissioned to fulfill the wishes of Madame Vogt, industrialist of Niederbrück, who vowed in 1914 to erect a statue to the Virgin if her property were spared. In 1919 Vogt's son awarded the commission to Bourdelle; the monument was erected in 1923.
