This British plate imitates Japanese Imari porcelain, characterized by dense patterns and a color palette of iron-red, deep blue, and gold. Unlike the delicate Japanese Kakiemon style, the Imari style was bold and opulent. It remained popular in England through the 19th century, with British ceramic factories producing patterns called "Japan," which were only loosely based on Imari.
